Seki's Japanese Restaurant

I just ate a tasty and enjoyable meal at Seki's Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar. It is located within walking distance of WashU's campus and offers traditional Japanese dishes and sushi. I had a bento box (pictured above) that was delicious. The sushi was fresh, and each slice seemed to be prepared with the ideal amount of wasabi. Compared to other restaurants, I felt that the bento box was a more reasonable portion of food, whereas many other Japanese restaurants tend to provide too much food in their bento boxes. As a corollary, Seki's bento was more reasonably priced. The waiters were quiet friendly and accommodating in a way that struck me as being grandparent-like. Overall, Seki's serves tasty and well-prepared food in a relaxing and home-like atmosphere.

First Day of Classes

I truly believe that I am in a school that understands the students and what they want. Why? The coffee on campus here leaves much to be desired, yet fresh-brewed French press coffee has the flavor and strength I desire in a brew. I just got back from the Engineering Department Induction Ceremony at Washington University in St. Louis. After a night of working in teams to tackle small problems and scenarios, like building a rainwater collection device, we had a ceremony where we were taught the school's engineering ethics. To complete our induction, we received awesome green hard hats!

My First Teavana Purchase

While at the mall I stopped into a Teavana boutique. It was a quaint place that had delicious samples and a wide variety of teas, tisanes and mates. I've long considered buying their products online, and today I decided to "dip my toe" into their offerings. I bought some Matevana, mate mixed with ingredients paired towards the palate of a coffee drinker, and also an tin container (with the cool Buddha logo on it!). I've had limited experience with brewing loose tea, but when I have done it before I've simply used my French press. I plan to do that again with this mate. If I enjoy the beverage enough to justify further purchases, I may get a Teavana Perfect Tea Maker and some more diverse loose teas. So far, though, it looks like a worthwhile purchase!

Forest Park

We visited Forest Park in St. Louis, and it is a beautiful area. It borders the eastern part of Washington University in St. Louis's Danforth Campus.The paths are pristine, the museums and zoo look outstanding, and there is even an outdoor theater that hosts a local Shakespeare Festival.

Ink Havoc While Moving

While moving to St. Louis, the box containing my fountain pens and inks was dropped. A bottle of Noodler's Black ink shattered and the ink somehow seeped out of its plastic bag and contaminated the whole box. Luckily, not much harm was done. I lost all of my nib-adjusting micromesh, the labels on my bottles of Legal Lapis and Aurora Black inks, and a felt pen roll. However, the rest of my inks are functional, my pens are undamaged, and life goes on. I have already ordered a replacement bottle of Noodler's Black that is being shipped directly to my dorm and am considering a new pen roll from Lai Yee of His Nibs.

Trapster for iPhone

While driving to St. Louis today I tried out the Trapster application for iPhone. It uses GPS to track your position, then presented alerts when approaching areas known to harbor police speed traps and intersections with red light cameras. It relies on the reports of other users to identify traps, and it spotted a couple of police cars correctly during our trip. The application allows you to rate whether there is currently a speed trap in known zones, and it also allows you to report new speed traps. The application suspends the sleep function of the iPhone and talks to the driver to alert of upcoming speed traps, so there was no need to worry about looking at the iPhone itself, hence allowing the driver to keep his or her eyes on the road. However, I found the program most effective when manned by a passenger who is able to devote attention to the details displayed on the screen, such as the precise location of speed traps. In urban areas, such as downtown St. Louis (pictured above), the application was a bit difficult to use due to the high density of intersections. Overall, though, Trapster still performed well and was a fun application to use during our road trip.

Bad Speck Manufacturing

After doing the video in my last post detailing the problems with my third Speck SeeThru shipment, I followed up on a hunch. I found a consistent problem in all three of the Speck SeeThru for Macbook Pro 15" (June 2009) in my possession. It turns out that the back-right hook on the bottom cover is dysfunctional in all three: the hook itself does not reach the metal edge to attach. I had this problem clearly in my first shipment, and then it recurred in my third. I had never even put my second SeeThru on my computer because of the crack in it, but I pulled it out now to see if the problem is present. It is. Below are pictures of the same position hook on the three SeeThru shipments I received:

There seems to be a consistent problem with this back-right hook on the Speck SeeThru for the 15" Macbook Pro. This makes it apparent to me that it is a design fault, and that no amount of replacement products can remedy the problem. Speck needs to reexamine this design and fix the placement of the hook Unless they can redesign the product to function on this computer, I would like a refund due to a bad product.

Honest Tea Caps

My favorite beverages are the iced teas, tisanes, mates and other brews of the Honest Beverages company. Every bottle has a lid that proudly displays its "USDA Organic" seal, and the inside of the cap shares an insightful and thought-provoking quote. I have a bizarre habit of keeping all of my lids from my Honest Tea bottles. Why? I don't know. I enjoy going through the lids sometimes to see the quotes. Other times, I ponder how I could recycle these lids into something creative or useful. I used to keep them in the top drawer of my dresser, but as I was cleaning for college I realized just how many lids I had, and I consolidated them into the above box. Regardless, I'm proud to have supported such a progressive company with such an excellent and healthy line of products.

Today marked my seventh and final Cedar Point visit of the summer. After riding the Millennium Force, we started to head towards the pavilions to have lunch. At that point it started to rain. We checked the weather on my iPhone while eating lunch, and it looked like the storm would persist for some time. Our solution? Rather than staying in shelter, we drove through it to go home.

Today, after a long wait, my replacement Speck SeeThru arrived via FedEx. The box looked rather crushed initially, and when I opened the box the case was packaged only in sheets of (non-crumpled) paper. When I unpackaged the product, there was a crack in the bottom piece. My previous one had a damaged hook, then the replacement arrived cracked. I emailed Speck customer service, and they told me they are overnighting a replacement with extra padding for Thursday delivery. This is excellent- had they shipped it via FedEx Ground, I would not have received it before leaving for college. Kudos to Speck for taking care of the customer!

On July 27 I received the above email from Speck after conversing with a representative about my faulty SeeThru. I thought that the email rather unequivocally stated that my replacement had shipped. However, on Wednesday of this week, seven full business days later, the product had not arrived. I emailed Speck to inquire as to whether the product had left the warehouse.

The Zagg Saga, Concluded

On Tuesday of this week I wrote a piece detailing what I termed Deplorable Zagg Customer Service. I tweeted about the piece hoping to show the world my disappointment in Zagg's business practices. One of the people who read the piece was a Zagg employee with the twitter username ZAGGbabe. She offered to help right the problem in a prompt manner. I sent her my order number, and the next day she had an employee contact me regarding my order. Ken from Zagg offered to overnight two replacement invisibleSHIELDs to me via FedEx, with the only stipulation being that I ship back the two defective invisibleSHIELDs I had received the prior day. I agreed, and today the package arrived. The two invisibleSHIELDs even arrived in a rigid cardboard box and in pristine condition.

Thank you to ZAGGbabe for proactively ensuring that I became a satisfied customer. The two invisibleSHIELDs are wrapped and ready to gift tomorrow as was originally intended. I have become a satisfied customer due to her actions and will now consider Zagg's products with an open mind should I be in the market to purchase more cases in the future.

I will be shipping back my two damaged invisibleSHIELD cases to Zagg early next week. However, I cannot help but to make an observation while I still have the boxes of four installation kits. It seems that there are some inconsistencies in the Zagg line, as detailed in the below pictures. The damaged cases arrived in a different design of cardboard case than the new cases. Among the four installation kits, there were three different designs of "SHIELDspray" canisters. Finally, I hear that the newest installation kits may come with a sponge instead of a spray bottle, further increasing the number of possible kit types. Granted, all of these kit types should be functional, but the lack of a consistent product can be a bit unnerving.

On a final note, I hope that Zagg has changed how it ships products and how it deals with customers. Though I was contacted by an employee who corrected prior errors by the company, I fear that had I not made my plight public knowledge that I would still be an unhappy customer. My replacement cases were shipped in a cardboard box, but Zagg should ensure that all installation kits that include a breakable spray bottle are shipped in rigid containers rather than flimsy envelopes. On a second note, Zagg customer service should work on improving the altruism of its employees. The original Zagg representative with whom I spoke over the phone was unwilling to help and unwilling to recognize errors by the company. By doing so, he established in my perception a facade of stubbornness and ignorance for the company as a whole. Today I can state that Zagg does have proactive employees willing to help customers, but the occasional negative employee can hurt pubic image of the company. Zagg should ensure that all employees who makes contact with consumers recognize that they each have a strong impact in perception of the company and in influencing return business. I was an unhappy customer who was fortunate enough to have a change of fortune, but Zagg will only become a truly admirable company in my eyes if they are able to change their practices for the benefit of all of their consumers.

Deplorable Zagg Customer Service

UPDATE: Zagg contacted me after reading the following piece and got my invisibleSHIELDs to me on time. Read the follow-up piece for the details: The Zagg Saga, Concluded.

My brother and I ordered two InvisibleSHIELD products as gifts for friends. We will be gifting these two products this Saturday, so we ordered the products well in advance. Today arrived the envelope containing the two InvisibleSHIELD installation kits, and they were destroyed during transit. Rather than being shipped in something that could provide crush protection, like a cardboard box, the InvisibleSHIELDs were shipped in a padded envelope. The inevitable happened, and one of the bottles of applicator solution was crushed during shipping, thereby damaging the packaging and even damaging the InvisibleSHIELDs. In the picture of the InvisibleSHIELD itself, it is clear that water even seeped into that package. The products arrived in unusable condition, let alone in condition fit to be gifted.

In order to try and remedy the problem, we contacted Zagg customer support. They proved to be of little help. When it was explained that we needed replacement products by Saturday, they said that would be near impossible. Their compensation: upgrading us from UPS shipping to FedEX ground shipping. In addition, they said that it takes three to five days in all cases for the product to even leave their warehouse, so even if they were to upgrade us to overnight shipping, the product would not arrive by Saturday. When we asked why the bottles of applicator solution were seemingly carelessly shipped in an envelope, they stated that it "is in a box anyways." In reality, the "box" that the solution bottle arrived in is more of a cardboard holder, and provides little to no crush protection. Furthermore, Zagg will likely ship our replacement products in the same flawed way. When we asked to speak to a supervisor, the customer care representative said that he couldn't transfer us without knowing what the problem was, thereby dodging our request. As a final attempt to satisfy us, the representative suggested that we go buy the product at a local Best Buy, essentially suggesting that trying to deal with the manufacturer was a hopeless endeavor. Unfortunately, the case we ordered is rather esoteric and is not carried at our local Best Buy.

What upsets me most is that Zagg has positioned itself as a premium product vendor. For these two products, we paid in excess of $50. Zagg has competitors, and their products are a fraction of the price. What differentiates Zagg, and the reason we paid the premium for their products, was that they claim to offer a superior product and better customer service. Instead, they can't ship a functional installation kit, and they abandon their customers. What bugs me most is that I could probably buy a competitor's product with overnight shipping for less than our Zagg order, and have it by Saturday. I own an InvisibleSHIELD screen protector for my iPhone, but if Zagg is unable to appease us, I am unlikely to purchase another of their products again.

Eagle Scout Letter of Commendation from Barack Obama

After a Boy Scout receives the highest rank of Eagle, it is traditional to request letters of commendation from various politicians and organizations. In December of 2008 I earned my Eagle Scout Award, and in the subsequent months letters of commendation arrived for me from various congressmen, branches of government, and even Vice President Biden. Later, we received a phone call that my mother almost thought was a prank- the caller announced herself as calling from the White House. The aide wanted to know the date of my Court of Honor in recognition of my achievement of the rank of Eagle. She also assured my mother that the letter of commendation from Barack Obama would be arriving, but that it would take a little bit of time due to the transfer of offices. Fast forward to today and, sure enough, an envelope arrived for me from the White House. The card is clearly hand-signed, which makes it of great sentimental value. It is reassuring to know that the President of the United States values and respects the effort and dedication required to earn the Eagle Scout Award enough to hand-sign this letter. I am very honored by this gesture, and will be sure to frame the card soon.
